Task 1
A: YOUR BEST PIECE OF CREATIVE WORK BEFORE COMING TO THIS COURSE
A LANDSCAPE IN A DWELLING
TASK: To redesign an existing terrace house site at 31 Ross Street, Glebe for the Executive Director of The Royal Botanic Gardens and his wife. (Year 1 Semester 2 Interior Architecture Studio 2 Project)
The brief required us to be inspired by an interpretation and abstraction of the natural landscape envoirnment of the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain site. My design explores the sectional abstraction of a rock at our site. At the gardens there is a central path that weaves in and out of a rock formation. I have simplified this rock form and tired to create a simple but yet central dramatic form that is wedged into the terrace's 3D space. The central form in the plans of my design acts as the core pathway on the site that holds all the functions of the house. The central space defines all the rooms and spaces in the house: entry, library, kitchen, dining, living, bedrooms and bathing spaces. I have attempted to heighten this experience with strong geometric lines and forms throughout the design and concept.
B: AN IMAGE OF A GREAT PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE
Rem KOOLHAAS
China Central TV Headquarters
East Third Ring Road
Guanghua Road
Beijing, China
This structure is interesting as it combines the complete process of TV making into a loop of interconnected activity. The CCTV provides a 3D experience that is interconnected which embraces the city of Beijing. It creates a flow of energy that is circulated through its unusual form. The heating and ventilation system is like the life of a human body, circulated around. People movement is cleverly solved by sequential elevators that rise vertically then step laterally though the space. The irregular geometry of the façade reveal the building’s steel structure and the expression of the forces moving through the building. At times the façade is dense or an open grid of diagonals, representing the structures experience under different stress and load conditions.
C: AN ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH OF SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL
This is a photo I took of Fat Lady, a painting and light installation that a friend and I experimented with one sunny afternoon in a garage we also turned into a studio. We painted this fat lady who would occupy this garage, randomly on the wall. Coincidentally a metal sheet lying on the table caught some light and started flickering by her beautifully. It is almost a symbol of her muted thoughts and conversations. The movement of the light was so raw and exposed on the bare surface. This photo captures the energy, isolation and loneliness of Fat Lady.
